The Cost of Social Media

Last night I was bored and was scrolling. My scrolling got out of hand and before I knew it my evening was gone. I went to bed mad that I had made such poor use of my evening. Scrolling and social media is the real pandemic.

I should have done so much better with my time. I could have planned my springtime garden, read, write, decluttered, or so many other things. Instead i chose to waste time looking at images of beaches, vacations, and other people having wilderness adventures.

There are many lifestyle changes I must make. Time is an unrecoverable asset and expense. I have to make it through the next nine years and then I will be free to enjoy the rest without being chained to a 50 hour work-week. Just have to make it there first. I think I will start by making this a four-day weekend starting tomorrow.

How can I do better and not get stuck scrolling but instead enjoy my time better? Some of the recommendations I have found I have listed below.

  • Put your phone away – The part here that is important is to put your phone far away. Park your phone far away from where you do the majority of things. If you have a reading nook or couch, charge it in the kitchen. Less access is better for reducing screen time.
  • Delete Apps – Easier said than done. You might not be able to do this at first. If that is the case, get rid of the ones you don’t look at much. Then start a slow unfollowing and gradually reduce what fills your feed. Just having a few friends or following a few people ma help reduce the load of time spent scrolling. As a benefit of this digital decluttering, you keep those people that mean the most to you.
  • Set time limits – If you can’t stop it all together, try setting a count down timer and limit you social media scrolling.
  • Avoid the scroll at bedtime – You can really waste a lot of time and miss out on a lot of quality sleep if you scroll before going to sleep. It might even affect your deep sleep.

These are just a few things to try. I really challenge you to track your social media time and see how you can improve your time.
