Day 13: GoPro Labs

Did you know GoPro has a whole catalog of “secret” settings? Get ready for a surprise.

So there is a little bit of an install to set up with the camera firmware. Once that is done, all you have to do is scan a QR code to load settings. You have to load this code every time you want to use it, there are no “hard” settings in the camera.

My favorite use is capturing wildlife. I can set the GoPro up at the bird feeder and capture birds as they stop and eat. Motion detection of the GoPro is activated by the camera comparing frames and looking for differences. It isn’t like a traditional trail camera that uses an IR sensor. The activation times might be a little slower. Also, the camera using this frame to frame comparison will be on the whole time. Battery usage will be high, so external power may be needed for those longer trappings.

The other options that the that you can setup a start time and end time. Definitely a helpful setting when you want to capture a sunrise without having to get out of bed early.

You can set it up as a dash cam as well. When you start moving, the GPS can sense the a speed and start recording at that speed. Could be a great function if you want to put the camera on the outside of a vehicle and not have to activate and stop when driving.

One of the other settings is the use of the sound activation. I have never used this. I just haven’t found an application in my usage of it. You can set a decibel level, and when it gets loud enough the camera starts recording. Maybe great for rocket launches or… I don’t know what else. I don’t attend a lot of rocket launches.

The bad news is, If you perform a firmware update a GoPro, you lose the ability to scan codes and use these “secret” settings.
